Fan View: Melton Town thrash Rushden & Higham

Fan match report from Melton Town Facebook page.

Melton and the Pork Pie Army travelled the 47 miles to Rushden today, hoping for a decent result. Due to roadworks and a bad accident many of the Pork Pie Army were still in transit when the game kicked off.

We arrived about 10 mins in but we were locked out, thinking it was a full house and we would have peak through the gaps not what you want after an hour and half in the car, we eventually got in the ground just as Bomber was being bought down for a pen, Laith dispatched it on 13 mins.

Four mins later it was 2 nil to Town with Bomber causing the danger for Zak to slot it home.

The game settled with the home side starting to shift the ball about playing some decent triangles but their play breaking down against a solid back 4, well marshalled by Cam and Leon winning everything in the air and playing diags at every opportunity.

Town created chances to increase the lead but the R&H defence stood firm plus Town wanting to take an extra touch instead of firing at goal saw them go in at HT 2 up.

In the interval I went to bar for a couple of cobs and fine young lady had no idea what I was on about, she thought I was talking about ale and then horses!?! After a few mins she delivered my cheese rolls (cobs) with a neigh.

Back to the football, 2nd half Rushden pressed and began to win more of the 2nd ball but Melton with a 2 goal advantage took their time building from the back finding Bomber in loads of space he again was running the fullback ragged.

Town 3 up through Laith on 53 and it was soon 4 with Zak getting his 2nd 2 mins later.

The drum was banging being accompanied on the honking horn by little Imogen who would have made her Grandad Ian very proud, #winningforwakka

The PPA were debating on who would get their trick 1st and on 64 mins it arrived, Zak playing a deft 1-2 off their centre half to put us 5 up.

Not to be outdone Laith was doing all he could to get his 3rd.

Buca and Manny were pulling the strings in the middle, the latter having his best game for a while.

Rushden continued to battle even with losing 2 to injury they carried on looking for a consolation goal and at spells you wouldn't have thought they were 5 down.

Bomber (Tom Harris) was a constant threat and he burst through looking to score but missed a chance that his Mum could have stuck away!

Town made all 3 substitutions and Ryan Robin's came over our side to replace Jordi. He made an instant impact and was fouled in the box but the ref waived play on and as we all know he doesn't go down lightly so it must have been a foul.

Then the moment of the match Town put together a slick 6 pass move from our 18 with Bomber involved twice and then drilling it home for number 6 on 84 mins.

Rushden pushed on and after a couple of corners and a bit of pressure on Peety's goal, their forward found himself clear but a cracking tackle by the captain stopped the attack but the ball bounced around and the chance to hoof it clear wasn't taken and Rushden pulled one back from 6 yards out much to the annoyance of Peety who gave his defence a rollicking.

Town still had time to score another great play up the right saw Henry 1 on 1 with their centre half out of position at fullback, Henry danced round him putting him on his arris, he cut in and fired it into the net.

In my view Bomber was man of the match today not taking anything away from our front two as they were unplayable but Bomber stepped up and gave Manny a selection headache for Tuesday with a class showing today.

A resounding win for Town but a great effort by Rushden who fought throughout and didn't drop their heads, we wish them good luck with the rest of the season.

Decent game for the ref and his 2 young assistants today.

Up next on Tuesday we welcome Aylestone in a local derby with them smashing in 7 today it could be a goal fest or a nil niller, come along and see for yourself, let's get into 3 figures again.
