Melton Town win final home game of the season in match replay

The final home match of the season saw Boston Town return to replay the snow abandoned game from a month ago, in which the visitors were three goals up at half time before the game was stopped, writes Sam Ellis.

The defeat four days before to Sherwood meant that this was a must win game for Melton if they were to keep up the chance of a play-off place. The match itself started at a fast pace with the first chance falling to Gianluca Bucci from a corner, but his header was tipped over the bar by Travis Portas.

The next attack saw a cross ball being brought down beautifully by Paul Anderson before touching it to Syme Mulvany, his resulting shot went inches wide of the far post. The visitors first chance came after 18 minutes when a corner was met by Liam Adams, only for his header to hit the top of the bar. Greg Mills had a turn and shot that needed Portas to tip over the bar and Henry Dunn hit a good strike that was well saved.

Melton came out in the second half with a renewed energy and in the first minute saw a Mulvany looping shot needing Portas at full stretch to tip the ball over the bar. Mulvany again caused the visitors problems when he got to the by-line before touching the ball back to Wakley in the six yard box but he sliced his effort wide of the post.

Boston started to get into the game and just after the hour mark an effort from the edge of the area by Adams had Bill Harrison at full stretch to prevent a goal. The deadlock was broken in the 70th minute and it was the visitors who had a cross finding Lee Beeson unmarked in the area, his half volley beat Harrison and nestled in the corner of the net.

Cue the introduction of Tyreace Palmer off the bench to spice up Melton’s attack. The Reds immediately responded to going a goal down when a ball out wide to Mills had him turning Mucklin and getting to the byline, sending a low cross into the area where Palmer had a tap in. Then in the 82nd minute a low corner was met with a Palmer half volley which found the corner of the net.

Almost from the restart a ball went into midfield, where Palmer played a superb flick onto Wakley who went clear of the defence and found the top corner with a rasping shot. Melton went hunting a fourth in the final few minutes and had a number of half chances but they saw the game out to collect the three points and go level third. A bumper crowd gave this game a great atmosphere but it did take Melton 75 minutes to really show their class after dominating most of the possession. They now have to go to Kimberley Miners Welfare in the last match of the season knowing they need a win a possibly a good few goals.
