SPORT: Cottesmore AFC V Blaby & Whetstone Abandoned at HT

It was a great start at Westray Park on Saturday Afternoon when Cottesmore hosted Blaby & Whetstone FC after they got a 2-goal lead.

Some great work from Cottesmore and a brilliant strike from Captain Danny Seals have Cottesmore the lead.

The heavy rain was the only real winner during the game as it was abandoned at Half Time.

The rain and hail kept pouring over the Rutland ground but the players and officials played on.

Tom Pope was able to christen his new playing boots with a wonderful goal half way through the first half, making it 2-0.

As HT approached the heavens opened even more causing a lot of standing water on the pitch which the ground volunteers put so much time and effort in to keep it up to scratch.

As the whistle blew you could tell from the look on the referees face he wasn't happy in carrying on.

Wet-Stray Park was covered by torrential rain and hail during Saturday's fixture.

Ground staff, match officials and both managers gathered on the soggy half way line which was more like the River Thames than a playing surface and the tension grew.

Fans in the stand didn't know what was happening but were enjoying the match so far.

As time went on and players were getting ready to come out and play again it was officially declared that the pitch was waterlogged and the match would be abandoned.

Players and Management staff weren't happy but the ref deemed it unplayable and called it off in the interests of player and officials safety.

The match will be re-arranged at a later date.
