Man arrested as police helicopter called to assist armed police in Melton

A man has been arrested after armed police and the police helicopter were deployed following reports of a man with a weapon in Melton.

Residents were shocked to hear the police helicopter overhead this afternoon (Monday) and armed police around the streets of Melton.

A Leicestershire Police spokesperson said: "Officers were called to the Melton area earlier this afternoon (Monday 15 May) after reports of a man seen acting suspiciously and possibly being in possession of a weapon.

In the interests of officer and public safety the armed response team were deployed to the area and were assisted in their search by the National Police Air Service (NPAS)."

Police were seen in the Egerton Park area of Melton and Dalby Road.

The spokesperson added: "A 46-year-old man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence."

Updated: 16th May 2023. The man has been released on bail pending further enquiries.
