Plans to close Melton's St Mary's Birth Centre have been included in new proposals released by the NHS.
The NHS are consulting on £450m proposals to transform acute and maternity services. A community health campus would be created at Leicester General Hospital.
The proposals suggest moving the St Mary's Midwifery-led service to a special hub at Leicester's General Hospital.
This would be run by nurses instead of Doctors and would need 500 babies per year born there to keep it .
The hub will also include a dedicated building for the Leicester diabetes centre of excellence and stroke recovery beds.
The reason behind potentially closing the St Mary's Birth Centre is the low numbers of babies which are born there. The centre only cares for low-risk births.
The midwife service changes are among a number of planned proposals across the three NHS sites in Leicestershire & Rutland.
