Network Rail hoping to have level crossing fixed by the 'end of this week'

It is hoped that a level crossing, which was damaged after being hit by a vehicle, will reopen by the end of this week.

Station Lane which links Kirby Bellars with Asfordby remains closed while Network Rail work hard to repair the damage which was caused by an unidentified vehicle on Wednesday evenung.

At the time a spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said: "A report was made at 4.55pm that a vehicle had hit a traffic light at the level crossing. As it was reported there was debris on the track, officers attended. No injuries were reported."

Network Rail confirmed on Thursday that a vehicle had struck the level crossing damaging the barrier and the lights.

This afternoon (Monday) Network Rail has told NEMM that there are some complexities while fixing the barrier, mainly how old the barrier is and the rare parts that are required.

A spokesperson for Network Rail said: "We are working hard to repair the crossing and reopen it for traffic but this particular level crossing is rare and we are currently waiting on parts and for a specialist engineer to fix it.

Crossings of this type are being replaced across the country due to their rarity and difficulty in sourcing parts. We are hoping to re-open the level crossing by the end of the week."

Leicestershire County Council has issued a new temporary traffic regulation order which allows Station Lane to remain closed until Friday 2nd August.

There is no access at all from one side to the other and the crossing is completely closed from both directions. Signage has been placed at the entrance to both sides of the crossing advising drivers that the road is closed at the level crossing.

Rail services through Melton & Oakham are not affected by the issue.
