Police confirm reason for late-night helicopter deployment to Asfordby

A man has been arrested after a van failed to stop for police which resulted in a pursuit being authorised.


Just before 11:30pm last night (Thursday) police requested for a Ford Transit van to stop in the Asfordby Road area of Melton.


The driver did not stop and a pursuit was authorised inlcuding a response from the National Police Air Service (NPAS).

Officers were also seen on the Asfordby Bypass searching the roadside and nearby bushes by torchlight.


A Leicestershire Police spokesperson said: "Just before 11.30pm, a request was made for the driver of a Ford Transit van to stop in Asfordby Road, Melton. The driver did not stop and a pursuit was authorised.


The van, which has since been confirmed as reported stolen from an address in Sharnford, was found abandoned in Saxelby Road, Asfordby."

A 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and remains in police custody.
