Governing body to investigate fatal Langar skydiving incident

A national governing body has begun an investigation into the death of an experienced skydiver near an airfield in The Vale of Belvoir.

Emergency services were called to Langar Airfield on the Leicestershire/Nottinghamshire border at 12:13 on Sunday afternoon.

It was then confirmed that a 22-year-old experienced sky divver was found in a nearby field and pronounced dead at the scene.

Nottinghamshire Police confirmed that no one else was injured.

It's now been confirmed that British Skydiving, which regulates the activity on behalf of the Civial Aviation Authority, would investigate the circumstances around the incident.

In a statement they said: "A British Skydiving Board of Inquiry will now be convened to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident. Once completed, a full report will be submitted to the Coroner, the Police, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), the British Skydiving Safety & Training Committee (STC), and any other relevant authorities.

The report will include the Board’s conclusions and any recommendations, where appropriate.

On Monday a spokesperson for Skydive Langar said: "Our immediate thoughts, deepest condolences and full support are with the skydiver's family, friends and everyone within our close-knit community who has been affected at this incredibly difficult time."

The centre added it was working with all relevant authorities and asked for "respect and privacy" for the family, staff and the wider skydiving community.

"We are deeply saddened to confirm that a fatal incident occurred at our centre involving an experienced skydiver," the spokesperson added.

"The entire team at Skydive Langar is devastated by this tragic loss."

Det Insp Rachel Mayfield from Nottinghamshire Police added: "This was a tragic incident, and we are working with partners to understand what happened.

"As our investigations continue at the scene, our thoughts are with the woman's family and everyone else who has been affected by this incident."
