Residents had taken to social media to offer the dog a home, with some praising the police and dog rescue's response.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said: "The dog had suffered significant injuries and was taken to a vet where sadly she was put down.

A 39-year-old man has today (Monday 12 August) been voluntarily interviewed regarding the incident and our enquiries remain ongoing."
