Leicestershire Police have issued an update on why a main road in to Melton was closed last night (Sunday).

Police posted a social media update around 20:41 on Sunday evening stating that Leicester Road was closed in both directions around the Samworth Brothers factory with no access in to Melton.

It's understood the road re-opened to traffic around 22:30 last night.

The road was closed from Leicester Road Industrial Estate to Samworth Way with no access from either direction. Police dogs and drones were all spotted in the area alongside armed police.

In a statement issued on Monday morning a force spokesperson said: "Just after 7.15pm yesterday (Sunday 22 February) a third-party report was received that there may have been a man in possession of a firearm in the area of Leicester Road, Melton Mowbray.

In the the interest of public and police safety, armed officers were deployed."

Following a search of the area, no-one was located and the spokesperson said that further enquiries are being undertaken to establish the nature of the report.
