Preparations are underway this afternoon (Saturday) to reopen Saxby Road following its closure for carriageway works for the new bypass.

The B676 closed back in June for the new roundabout to be incorporated in to the road network along with the A606 Nottingham Road and St. Bartholomew’s Way which reopened earlier this week.

Saxby Road is due to reopen at 7pm on Sunday evening and brings to a close the road closures for the project, which started back in 2023.

New roundabouts have been installed at all major junctions of the Melton Mowbray Distributor Road on Spinney Road, Thorpe Road, Saxby Road, Burton Road and Nottingham Road with all major routes closed at various points along the way.

The £115m scheme is being funded by the UK Government, Leicestershire County Council, the Leicester & Leicestershire Local Enterprise Partnership and developer contributions, and will deliver a nearly 5 mile road with walking and cycling facilities. The scheme is expected to open in early 2026.

Built by contractors Galliford Try on the council’s behalf, the scheme includes constructing six roundabouts and four bridges, the diversion of the River Eye Site of Special Scientific Interest and new cycling and walking infrastructure along its full length.

Drivers are urged to take care when approacing newly opened roads due to the change of layout.
