Tributes paid to 'beautiful, loving soul' who died in Syston lake tragedy

Tributes have been paid to a 13-year-old boy who died after getting in to difficulty while paddling in a lake in Syston.

Hayden Jones-Powell has been described by his family as a 'cheeky, gorgeous 13 year old' in a Crowd Funder online.

Hayden was a West Brom fan and tributes at the local skate park include football shirts printed and pinned to a fence.

Hayden’s family said in the Crowdfunder that he had gone “paddling with his friends” after school.

Tragically, Hayden got into trouble and never made it home.

£4,500 has already been raised in a few hours out of their target of £6,000.

Police were called just after 1.30pm to Meynell Lake, in Fosse Way. Officers attended along with Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service and East Midlands Ambulance Service.

Initial searches were carried out and police divers were called in.

Leicestershire Police confirmed today (Friday) that a body had been recovered from the water.

A spokesperson said: "There is no suggestion of any suspicious circumstances and a file will be prepared for HM Coroner."

Hayden was a student at Wreake Valley Academy in Syston who have said they are devestated by the news.

In a statement they said: "We are devastated by the loss of one of our students and our thoughts and deepest condolences are with their family and friends.

This tragic accident has deeply affected everyone at our school and we are providing support to students, staff, and families who need it. We kindly ask that the privacy of those affected is respected during this extremely difficult time.”
