Saint-Gobain has announced the launch of a new low-carbon stone wool insulation plant in the UK, which will be located on a site owned by the Group in Melton.
The factory, which will be situated on the site of the former Holwell Works, is expected to begin production in 2027.
The facility will initially produce 50,000 tonnes per year of high-performance stone wool
insulation for the UK market with the potential to double its output to 100,000 tonnes per year.

The new manufacturing facility will benefit from cutting-edge technology, including a fully
electric furnace, powered by renewable electricity. This flagship investment will help customers reduce the embodied carbon of construction projects by lowering the CO2 (scope 1 and 2) footprint of stone wool insulation1.
It will help meet the country’s growing demand for both stone wool and low-carbon solutions.
New low-carbon stone wool manufacturing further reinforces Saint-Gobain’s comprehensive offer to customers in the UK that includes fully tested systems incorporating the Group’s existing plasterboard, construction chemicals, glazing, insulation and steel frame structural systems. Together, these solutions for light and sustainable construction make Saint-Gobain the undisputed leader in building envelopes in the UK and will contribute to driving further growth.
This project is part of Saint-Gobain’s commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Leader of Melton Borough Council Pip Alnett has praised the decision. He said: “Right now, the construction industry plays a vital role in driving economic growth, and ensuring high quality building materials is essential in achieving this. This investment is outstanding news, and represents a terrific vote of confidence in Melton and our region. This new factory will bring with it cutting-edge technology, powered by renewable electricity further strengthening our aspirations to grow the local green economy.
“It’s been a great pleasure working with Saint-Gobain over recent months, and for the council to have been able to assist them in their decision to bring this major investment into Holwell. We look forward to continuing this positive relationship and working together in the future and want to get the message out to other investors that we are open for business.”
Holwell Works is situated in Asfordby Ward of Melton Borough, Ward Councillor Cllr Margaret Clay added: “I am delighted that Saint Gobain have chosen to base their new operation at the Holwell site on Asfordby Hill. Our Borough, and Asfordby Ward, will benefit enormously from a prestigious global company’s investment, particularly regarding the potential of good quality employment opportunities and availability of training for young people.
“I am grateful to the Council leaders and officers who have been working so hard to secure this deal.”
The factory is aiming to start production in 2027.
