Ten fire engines battle over the border recycling blaze which could be seen in Melton

Northamptonshire Fire & Rescue Service has been fighting a major blaze at a recycling centre this afternoon (Monday).

Ten fire engines raced to the scene on Gretton Brook Road, Earlstrees Industrial Estate in Corby, after being called shortly before 2pm (August 10).

The smoke could been seen for miles around including here in Melton, more than 20 miles away, with a huge plume of smoke being visible on the horizon.

In an update posted this evening it’s been confirmed that they expect to scale the incident down in the next few hours.

A spokesperson for Northamptonshire Fire & Rescue Service said: “Ten fire engines and two aerial appliances are currently on scene tackling around 500 tonnes of recycling waste that is on fire.

The incident is expected to be scaled down in the next few hours, but crews are expected to remain on scene overnight and into tomorrow.

Gretton Brook Road remains closed by

Northamptonshire Police.

Nearby residents are asked to please close their windows and doors due to the plume of smoke and to please avoid the area”

The cause will be investigated once extinguished.
