A tree in Melton Town Centre has been felled after part of it fell on to a public footpath below.
The tree, in St. Mary's Close in Melton, was inspected by officers from Melton Borough Council and a local tree surgeon following reports of a damaged tree.
A spokesperson for Melton Borough Council, “Our team has been working with a local tree surgeon to assess and safely manage a damaged tree in St Mary’s Close. On Monday we discovered a large section of the tree had failed, causing debris to fall which posed risk to the public in the area. Our contractors swiftly attended the scene to remove the debris and make the area safe.

“During further inspection, it was confirmed that the tree had sustained significant damage and would need to be removed to maintain the safety of the area.
“The tree has now been felled, and the site has been secured. Due to the size and weight of the trunk, specialist equipment is needed to remove this section safely. The contractors will return with the appropriate equipment to remove the main trunk as soon as possible.”

It's not known how the tree suffered the damage.
